Erectile dysfunction (ED)

     Erectile dysfunction (ED) is physiological disorder, which is expressed in recurring inability to develop and maintain an erection which is a serious obstacle for performing a successful sexual intercourse. Sometimes the phenomenon of erectile dysfunction is considered equivalent to the term “impotence”, but in fact, these two are different physiological dysfunctions and there exist some distinctive features.
      Impotence is characterized not only by difficulty of obtaining and keeping up an erection, as in the case of ED, it also includes several additional problems such as lack of sexual attraction or difficulties with ejaculation. So, when the term “erectile dysfunction” is used, it means that there are no problems typical for impotence, thus, the dysfunction is less severe.
      Erectile dysfunction can present different degrees of its manifestation.
      • Physiological failure to develop and maintain erection of the penis strong enough for committing coitus;
      • Ability to get and keep up erection is very rare and is characterized by irregularity.
      • Erection is too brief and disappears during the sexual intercourse or even before it starts.
      No less that 30% of all men aged between 30 and 70 face various erectile function problems which are more or less severe and the greater part of these dysfunctions can be corresponding to the notion of erectile dysfunction.
      Scientists distinguish two main causes of ED, one of which is of physiological, and the second is of psychological origin.
      Physiological causes presuppose any factors hampering normal blood flow and blood retention in penis.
      Psychological causes deal with man’s state of mind, his thoughts and emotions that prevent the man from having a normal erection.
      Main ED causes are:
      • Arterial Disorders – for example, hypertension or insufficient penis blood-supply;
      • Hormonal Disorders –lack of testosterone in the organism, tumor of pituitary gland;
      • Neurogenic Disorders – brain injuries, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and others;
      • Surgical operations on colon, bladder or prostate;
      • Cavernosal Disorders, for example, Peyronie’s disease;
      • Alcohol and drug abuse, cigarette smoking, obesity;
      • Ageing
      • Psychological problems.
      Modern medicine proposes various methods of ED treatment, and the only thing necessary is to address the physician if any problems with erection arise.
