There exist three FDA approved erectile dysfunction treatment pills – Viagra (active component sildenafil), Cialis (active component tadalafil), Levitra (active component vardlenafi).
These all are PDE-5 inhibitors and have similar mechanisms of action – by relaxing the muscles and dilating blood vessels, thus increasing blood flow to genitalia zone, in particular to the penis. Due to this it is possible for men with ED to develop and maintain a firm erection during the sexual act. However, neither Viagra nor Cialis and Levitra can provoke erection at once after taking the pill, because in all three cases sexual desire and tactile stimulation of the penis are necessary to get an erection. Besides, all three drugs can not serve as aphrodisiac, or contraceptive, or as means to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra can not be taken by women (except Female Viagra), and by children. Also, one should not use these drugs if he has problems with blood cells forming or blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, recent stroke or heart attack, eye problems, penis deformations and some others. Before taking any of these three medications one must consult a doctor and follow his orders. It is forbidden to take Viagra, Cialis or Levitra if one also takes nitrate medications and be careful with them taking alpha-blockers at the same time. Alcohol and grapefruits should be avoided. All three can have similar side effects (fainting, chest pain, headache, change in vision, prolonged erection and some others).
Viagra, Cialis and Levitra work for overwhelming majority of men (around 70%), and if they do not help any other methods should be used, such as penis pumps or implantants.
