Viagra: General Information

Viagra (brand name Viagra, active ingredient - Sildenafil Citrate) is medication widely used for treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer Company and it looks like small blue tablet (25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg.) with company’s name (“Pfizer”) in the centre.
Viagra’s active ingredient sildenafil serves as PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitor, and it works by widening blood vessels, thus increasing blood flow to the penis. In this situation it becomes possible to develop and maintain the erection, which is natural and firm enough for committing a sexual act. After the sexual intercourse finishes and ejaculation occurs, erection goes away.
Viagra works for about 5 hours and it can not serve as method of obtaining unnaturally long erection, and if you have erection for more than 4 hours, address the doctor immediately. Viagra was the first pill with powerful ED treatment action and numerous evidences proved its effectiveness. It is necessary to remember that Viagra is normally prescribed for men (for women there exist a special variation “Female Viagra”), and it should not be taken by women or children under 18 years of age.
Viagra shows no contraceptive effect and can not be used as method of preventing sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV and others. When Viagra is taken, no immediate erection occurs, sexual desire and tactile penis stimulation are necessary to develop erection. This pill is unable to provoke sexual desire or constant wanting of sex, thus Viagra is not aphrodisiac and its function is limited by physiological aspects.
It is forbidden to use Viagra if man also takes nitrate medications (such as isosorbide dinitrate, glyceryl trinitrate or nicorandil and others), otherwise the risk of fainting and even heart attack increases greatly.
One should be careful combining Viagra with alpha-blocker medicines (such as prazosin, terazosin, alfuzosin, indoramin and others) as they can decrease blood pressure significantly.
It is necessary to use smaller amount of Viagra if cimetidine, ketoconazole, itraconazole or erythromycin are taken at the same time because these medications raise blood level.
